Galleri GRO, Jakobsstad
The scenario, a collage of anecdotes and cut outs of reality opens up towards an urban landscape, switching between night and day.
Gerwin
Luijendijk’s (*1980 in Zaandam/NL) work ”This is
not my space” was produced during his residency at Nykarleby. In this work he
films an improvisational dancer and her routine. Due to the mirrored dance
hall, the artist himself becomes part of the performance. By adding his own
personal voiceover he reflects on his role as artist, his artistic choices and
on the female dancers game with the camera and the mirrors. This work is
accompanied by a digital photograph, which shows a huge rock in the
neighbourhood of the old Östanlid Sanatorium. The visitor of the exhibition can
sit on a bench just in front of the image, but with its back to this desirable
view.
The other video by Gerwin Luijendijk,
“Form as we know it”, shows the artist’s parents at home, learning the English
Waltz with the help of an instruction video. Here he wants to investigate his
possible influence on what happens in front of the camera, more through a
conceptual set up than the classical role of a film director. Desire and the
question how to get closer to its fulfilment is a red thread in the artists
works. How does each person deal with the boundaries of its own existence and
the day-to-day compromises?
Nina
Svensson (*1968 Sollefteå/SE) and Bernd Krauß (*1968 in Nürnberg/GER)
arrived with a paper figure in their mind to Nykarleby they had found at the
Kulturmagasinet in Sundsvall built by kids resembling the Swedish King Gustav
Adolf. Even being the founder of Nykarleby he had never been in the village.
With a reconstruction of this paper figure both or better all three moved on a
trolley through Nykarleby, showing him around and making him familiar with site
and people. Shortly before leaving the team of Café Brostugan declared they
would love to overtake taking care about the paper king until Nina Svensson and
Bernd Krauß would come back for the summer to install their work ”Kungen har
ett hem” at Brostugan. The installation they present in Jakobstad is a new
version called now ”GA Salen”.
Next to the King a panorama documentation
of Gunner Cléments Wall painting at Brostugan can be found. A series of
architectural drawings by the until unknown artist group ”Soffgruppen” is shown
in a more archival situation on the back wall. Brostugan´s activities are
resembled with a conference of Coffee cans under a seating furniture in the
centre of the installation.
